 Coaching lessons I’ve learned

  • We often hesitate and make an already difficult process of job searching even more difficult, because we are waiting for the “right” time.

The antidote to this is to just start — whether it is revising your resume, updating your LinkedIn, scheduling that “coffee chat”— you need to just START.

I can help you to stay accountable and to get more out of the process— but I can’t press START for you and I can’t do the work for you.

  • We don’t realize how many AMAZING ROLES are out there and that we are qualified for.

We put blinders on and only consider the roles that are most obvious and most similar to our current role.

We don’t take 30 minutes to search for jobs on LinkedIn, even though the algorithm will kick in and then do the work for us.

We don’t take enough time to really study job descriptions of roles that are broader than our obvious consideration set. You are qualified for roles that you probably never thought about, or that you had inaccurate thoughts about.

  • We forget how much experience we have and we forget about all of our accomplishments throughout our career.

We don’t take a step back and really take a trip down memory lane and think through the projects and work that we did. I promise that if you spent even 3 months somewhere, you accomplished something worthwhile.

We don’t think in terms of transferable skills, so we ignore discussing roles or projects that seem less relevant to the job we’re applying for. We could be missing out on sharing golden nuggets to our interviewer.

  • We don’t use our network.

Approximately 7 times out of 10, you know someone, or you know someone who knows someone who works/worked at a company that you are interested in. It has never been easier to network with others, thanks to valuable resources like LinkedIn.

  • We create artificial scarcity.

We are narrow in the roles we explore, we don’t get the interview or the job and then we get really dejected and lose motivation. We focus on the role that we didn’t get— as if there aren’t a ton more. As if every job isn’t discrete. One rejection is just that. You need to keep going. Yes, review your resume, LinkedIn and other touchpoints to make sure that you’ve optimized what you are offering, but keep moving forward.

  • We don't realize when we need help.

Yes, motivation is key to us taking action and moving towards our goals. That said, change is scary and it can feel overwhelming. In those times, the overwhelm can beat out our motivation. If you find that you have motivation, but an entire week passes and you still can’t take a step forward, this can be a big indicator that you need some help. Our career coaching services can take your motivation and combine it with structure, an action plan, and accountability, so you stay motivated and make significant progress. We all have moments when we pump the brakes, even though we really really want to put our foot on the gas. We just need to recognize that we haven’t moved anywhere and that we need to take a different approach.
